PROMÉXICO AND THE TEQUILA REGULATORY COUNCIL SIGN COLLABORATION AGREEMENT

 

  • The two entities will implement the Strategy for the International Strengthening of the Designation of Origin Tequila (DOT).
  • The aim is to strengthen the presence of certified tequila in international markets.

The Tequila Regulatory Council (Consejo Regulador del Tequila A.C.) and ProMéxico signed a collaboration agreement which formalizes the Strategy for the International Strengthening of the Designation of Origin Tequila (DOT).

The CEO of ProMéxico, Francisco N. González Díaz, and the President of the Tequila Regulatory Council, Miguel Ángel Domínguez Morales, agreed to push the exclusive presence of certified tequila in international markets.

Among the highlights of the agreement is the implementation of the International Tequila Monitoring System (SIMT in Spanish) at points of sale in selected markets, which is based on using the network of 48 accredited ProMéxico offices in 31 countries to monitor and visit selected sites where the Mexican product is distributed.

The merchandise monitored and aspects to consider for the evaluation are:

  • Beverages that claim to be or contain tequila
  • The description of the primary container in which the product is sold
  • The description of the secondary container, i.e. packaging and wrapping
  • Inspection of volumetric content
  • Brand inspection
  • Checking that the product has the Denomination of Origin stated on the label
  • The description of the advertising and promotion material that accompany the detected product, both for purchasing and tasting

The Tequila Regulatory Council will train ProMéxico staff and provide the necessary documentary information about the Designation of Origin Tequila and the applicable regulations, as well as updated information about the certified national and international brands.

Mexico exports mezcal, tequila, and sotol, three beverages with Designation of Origin, which can only be produced in specific regions of the country.

It is worth mentioning that tequila exports had a value of over 997 million dollars in 2013, which translates to 149 million liters. Also in that year, 128 companies made sales abroad, 64% of them located in the state of Jalisco.
