Berlin, is the capital of Germany and one of the sixteen German federal states. It is located in northeast Germany, barely 70 km from the Polish border. The Spree, Havel, Panke, Dahme, and Wuhle rivers run through the city.
With a population of 3.4 million inhabitants, Berlin is the most populated city in the country, the second in size, and fifth largest urban area among European Union countries.
Berlin is a world city and first class cultural and artistic center. It is one of the most influential cities in the political arena of the European Union and in 2006 was elected Creative City by UNESCO.
In 2009, the city received the Prince of Asturias Award.
