Beijing—literally the Capital of the North—is the capital of the People's Republic of China and has a population of around twenty million inhabitants.
The total gross domestic product for 2007 was 121 billion yuan, an increase of 50.2% over the previous year. Per capita GDP was 20,746 yuan.
The tertiary sector, especially real estate and cars—particularly luxury vehicles—has grown spectacularly in recent years. In 2002, a total of 19,044 square meters of housing were sold. In the same period 946,000 cars were sold. The total number of registered cars exceeds six million, of which 79% are privately owned.
The Central Business District is in the Guomao area and is recognized as the new nucleus of the city's economic and financial life, it is the location of the corporate offices and headquarters of different regional companies, shopping malls, huge department stores, and luxury housing. Wangfujing and Xidan streets are famous for their stores. Zhongguancun—the Chinese Silicon Valley—continues to be an important center for the electronics and computer industries, and for pharmaceutical research.
